What’s new in the June 2024 Google system update for Android

The monthly Google System Release Notes provide details about new features primarily for Android phones and tablets, Wear OS, Google/Android TV, Auto, Play Services for PC, Play Store, and Play System updates. Some features are targeted to end users, while others are targeted to developers.

The “Google System” consists of the following first-party apps:

The most notable thing is June 12 The headline update is that “you can now back up and restore your device during setup using USB and Wi-Fi simultaneously.” The latest Fast Pair setup process prioritizes Wi-Fi, but there’s a hidden trick that leverages the cable.

If you want to transfer your data over a USB cable instead of Wi-Fi, tap the image on the “Copy apps and data” screen five times. You can do this even if you haven’t paired your phone yet.

Another thing worth noting about Google Play Services is that “lost or stolen devices can be set to automatically lock if they lose connectivity,” which could be a reference to offline device locking.

Finally, there’s adaptive battery optimization.
