Google is slowly but surely figuring out different ways for users to interact with and use the Gemini AI model. It can already replace Google Assistant as the default voice assistant, and a recent update means you can now use Gemini with Google Messages.
This means that users will be able to interact with the chatbot directly from the messaging app, without having to launch the Gemini app or set it as their default assistant (if they want to stick with Google Assistant). This is a great way to get more people to use chatbots as Google continues to enhance the experience.
That being said, accessing Gemini in Google Messages is extremely easy. Here’s how to get started:
How to use Gemini with Google Messages
1. Open Google Messages Mobile phone apps.
2. Tap Start a chat Click the button in the bottom right corner.
3. Selection Gemini From the list.
4. When prompted, Continue button.
5. Read the Gemini overview in Google Messages Agree button.
6. Start a chat With Gemini!
At the time of writing, Google is rolling out new ways to make Gemini even easier to use in Google Messages. A server-side update is coming soon, and you can tap[新しいチャット]A new floating button will appear above the button.
This lets you skip a few taps if you want to pick up where you left off or start a new conversation without scrolling through a never-ending list of chats and groups.
Using Gemini is really convenient
If it’s available on your phone, being able to use Gemini with Google Messages is super convenient – it’s essentially no different than using the standalone Gemini app from the Play Store.
But by having it accessible within the Messages app, you can treat Google Gemini just like any other text conversation: think about what to make for dinner, plan your next trip, or even ask about a photo you just took. Best of all, this new feature isn’t available without a fee like Gemini Advanced, it’s completely free to use.
Who can use Gemini with Google Messages?
Unfortunately, using Gemini with Google Messages isn’t currently available on all Android phones and is subject to some limitations, as noted on Google’s support page.
- An Android device with at least 6GB RAM.
- Your phone’s language is set to a supported language.
- A personal Google account that you control.
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- RCS chat is now on.
There’s no specific mention of it being limited to a particular brand of device, but it could be that there’s some gatekeeping going on, or it’s just being rolled out slowly with looser requirements. At the time of writing, Google Messages Gemini is available on Pixel phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, and even the Nothing Phone 2. However, it doesn’t appear to be available on other phones that meet the requirements, such as the OnePlus Open or the new Razr Plus 2024. Still, we expect this to change in the coming weeks or months, possibly with a server-side update.
AI, but affordable
The Google Pixel 8a is Google’s newest smartphone, offering a flagship-like design, a top-tier processor, and great cameras at a surprisingly affordable price, while also giving you access to many of Google’s latest AI features powered by Gemini.
