It’s that time of year when you can learn about the players on the remaining two National Football League teams that will participate in the Super Bowl. As a sports fan, I enjoy news articles about coaches and players, especially those that are heartwarming or uplifting. To be honest, I escape from the news by watching or listening to sports programs, and when I want to ignore the reality of political news, sports is my go-to, with the exception of a good book.
There’s always drama in the world of sports and nothing can be changed about it, so all I can do is enjoy, get out the popcorn and watch the show. There’s more drama than usual leading up to the Super Bowl this year. Because many extremists are threatened that a football star would have the audacity to date superstar Taylor Swift. This angry grandma doesn’t know whether to say “bless their hearts” or “oh my gosh!”
Swift is dating Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, whose team will face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Kelce has broken all kinds of records, is one of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ go-to receivers, and is a lot of fun to watch.
Whatever the attraction between Kelce and Swift is, it’s their problem, but they seem happy, in love, and safe with each other. I’m a fan of hers and her songs are on my playlist. I like her music and videos and respect the way she takes ownership of her songs and controls what she creates.
As I listened to her speak out about social issues and the need to register to vote, Swift moved into one of my favorite categories: Shero.
My dear friend and mentor, the late and great former Metro City Councilwoman Betty Nixon, said that when women speak up and thereby displease the establishment, they feel “elated.” He explained to me that he was there. Why are people afraid of a strong woman who is asking people to register to vote and demanding equal rights for the LGBT community? Swift grew up in Tennessee and recently donated $1 million to victims of December’s devastating tornadoes. Donated.
Shero: When a woman speaks up and makes an organization uncomfortable, she is considered to have “integrity.” No wonder the right wing has such strong hatred for Taylor Swift.
Who is launching these attacks against her, and who has anything to gain by silencing her? These people don’t want the women in their family to be strong and successful. Is it? Why does this happen in a presidential election year? Who wants to prevent people from registering to vote? Think about it.
Are the followers of a candidate known for having “orange” skin color extremists? I’m not talking about the members of her VolNation who dye themselves Tennessee orange for the game, but the candidates who are known for thoroughly eliminating the looks and brains of women who threaten them. Are you referring to that?
When my husband and I owned a bookstore, BookManBookWoman, in Nashville’s Hillsboro Village, it was not unusual for celebrities to stop by. We tried to make them feel welcome and not embarrass them to death while relaxing them with a book.
Taylor Swift came in one day and asked about our history section. As I ask most of her customers, I asked her if she wanted her books to look good, to decorate her bookshelf, or if she wanted to learn something. She gave the correct answer, so I pulled out a copy of her favorite book in American history and left her to browse through the thousands of books in her history section.
Some fans asked for photos while she was paying for the book, and Swift couldn’t have been more kind to them. She was patient, courteous, personal and waited for her turn to pay. As she was leaving, I told her that I was a fan of her music. I also asked her if her cute flats were comfortable for her. Those of us who have worked in retail or the service industry know that when our feet hurt, our whole body hurts.
I wish I had attended Swift’s last concert in Nashville because seeing her perform is on my lifelong goal list. It takes courage for her to wear her bright red lipstick, so I admire her as well. This color is my go-to color when I want to feel special or to cheer myself up. Red lipstick is difficult to apply, even if you have it applied by a professional. It takes a confident woman to wear bright red lipstick that can stain almost every part of her face except her teeth and lips. If Swift reads this commentary, I’ll tell her what I say every time she’s on the news: “Good luck, good luck!”
