Tokyo, February 6, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (Tokyo: 6503) today announced that the Smart Lander for Lunar Exploration (SLIM) developed by the company under a contract with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will be launched in January. It will make a high-precision landing on the moon’s surface at 12:20 a.m. on the 20th (Japan time).
Data collected by JAXA confirms that the high-precision touchdown took place just 55 meters east of the target landing site, compared to traditional lunar landings that typically occur within a few kilometers of the target. This was an unprecedented achievement, far exceeding the accuracy of . High-precision landing technology to accurately position spacecraft will become increasingly important for future lunar and planetary exploration.
Mitsubishi Electric was awarded the contract in 2015 to have primary responsibility for the design, manufacturing and testing of SLIM at its Kamakura facility in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. Mitsubishi Electric, in collaboration with JAXA, has also developed a guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) system used for high-precision landings. His GNC system’s various sensors, including cameras and radar, onboard computers and software, allow SLIM to autonomously estimate its position and attitude and make necessary corrections during flight. His GNC system, equipped with a JAXA-developed image navigation system (including image navigation algorithms and cameras), can estimate position by taking images of the lunar surface and locating craters.
