The former Trump administration official who was shot and killed in a series of carjackings in Washington, D.C., early last week died Saturday, the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department announced.
Police said Michael Gill, 56, was in his car parked in Mount Vernon Square on Monday when 28-year-old Artel Cunningham got into the car and shot him.
Police said Cunningham fled on foot before driving up to 35-year-old Alberto Vasquez Jr. and a woman and demanding their keys. Authorities said Cunningham shot and killed Vasquez, fled the scene in a car and committed two more carjackings in Prince George’s County the next morning, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffrey Carroll told reporters Tuesday. He said this at a press conference.
Cunningham was eventually stopped and shot by two New Carrollton, Maryland, police officers on Tuesday. Carroll said preliminary information obtained through interviews with officials suggests the suspect “may have been in some type of mental health crisis or had mental health issues.” He said it shows.
Mr. Gill previously worked at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission during the administration of former President Donald Trump. He is survived by his wife Christina and three children.
“His sudden resignation has left a void in our lives that will never be filled. …Mike was not only a devoted husband and father, but also a cherished son, brother and friend. “Through his remarkable life, Mike brought people together and made them feel included, supported and loved,” Christina Gil said in a statement.
Before his death, Michael Gill worked for several years at the Housing Policy Council, a real estate industry group, the group’s president, Ed DeMarco, confirmed in a statement.
“His HPC colleagues mourn his loss. We respected Mike personally and professionally,” DeMarco said.
