Mr. Rosendale and Mr. Gaetz were part of a small group of Republicans who removed Representative Kevin McCarthy from the House speakership and temporarily suspended him from operating the chamber. Rosendale was opposed to putting McCarthy in the role in the first place, and appears to have rejected calls from Trump to advocate for Greene in the House.
Rosendale also has the support of former Trump strategist Stephen K. Bannon, who is planning a major campaign in Montana next month. Rosendale is a frequent guest on Bannon’s War Room podcast, where he is popular with conservatives and has often spread misinformation.
Rosendale entered 2024 with $1.7 million in federal campaign funds. The amount, about 40% of what he spent on Mr. Tester six years ago, is expected to go toward the effort to nominate Mr. Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL who founded an aviation firefighting company. This is only a small portion of the funds available.
Two super PACs aligned with traditional Republicans, the Senate Leadership Fund, associated with Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, and American Crossroads, co-founded by Karl Rove, each spend about It has secured $22 million. election.
The third super PAC supporting Mr. Sheehy is known as “More Jobs, Less Government,” and is backed by several wealthy Wall Street executives. Kenneth Griffin gave $5 million, Paul Singer $1 million and Stephen A. Schwartzman $400,000, according to Federal Election Commission filings. The super PAC has hired Tony Fabrizio, a longtime Trump pollster, and Andy Slavian, a strategist who has worked on all three of Trump’s presidential campaigns.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tester has kept pace with the Republican spending surge. His campaign has spent $5 million on advertising in the state and is backed by two Democratic super PACs, Wincenate and Last Best Place. Together, the two companies spent about $50 million, much of it on ad reservations for the general election. The two PACs have ties to Senate Majority PAC, the top outside group for Senate Democrats.
