Apple is working on a ton of changes to its iPhone 16 models, from camera improvements to design. While the phone is expected to launch later this year, we hear that the iPhone 16 will add new capacitive buttons with dedicated functionality for the camera hardware. However, very few details have been released so far about the kind of features we should expect. According to a Weibo leaker, the iPhone 16’s capture button may come as his two-stage shutter button similar to digital cameras.
iPhone 16’s capture button can be used as focus adjustment or shutter button
Initially, it was reported that Apple was planning to launch iPhone 16 models with a new capacitive button below the power button or side button. However, the function of the button was unclear. The company recently launched iPhone 15 Pro models with an action button, which is basically a shortcut button. The action button can perform common actions, so the new capture button only responds to camera functions on iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models.
In a previous report, we mentioned that the capture button might come with the ability to zoom in and out through a touch and slide mechanism. It’s rumored to be a capacitive button, so it will have the ability to differentiate between taps and slides. Additionally, the pressure-sensitive nature of the buttons could also provide room for multiple commands to be entered. According to “Instant Digital” on Weibo, the Capture Button is used as a shutter button, and pressing the button halfway adjusts the focus.
For those not familiar, this is the same technology used in most DSLR and mirrorless cameras. A half-press on the shutter button adjusts the focus of the image or video, and a hard or full press captures the result. Apple appears to be developing a similar button for the iPhone called the “Capture Button.”
Apple seems to be trying to turn the iPhone into a full-fledged camera system that can be used by professionals. However, it remains to be seen what kind of upgrades the company will bring to the camera app to better utilize the iPhone’s capture button. As mentioned earlier, the capture button is placed below the iPhone’s power button. This is an ideal location for a dedicated camera button in landscape mode.
Note that the iPhone 16 launch is several months away and the device has not yet entered mass production. The company’s plans may change in the future, so please take this news with a grain of salt.
