Brittney Griner, the U.S. women’s basketball star who was jailed for 10 months in Russia in 2022 and released in a prison exchange, was not among the 12 players named to the U.S. national team on Sunday. Ta.
Greiner, 33, a star center for the women’s NBA Phoenix Mercury, was among 18 players invited to a three-day training camp in New York that ended Sunday.
However, she was not among the 12 players on the U.S. team to compete in the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament, which begins Thursday in Antwerp, Belgium.
Greiner reportedly won’t be able to play next week, but he did get some valuable practice time with the U.S. national team.
As defending champions, the Americans have already qualified for the Paris Olympics later this year, but will participate in the quadrennial qualifying tournament to help prepare for the Olympics.
The U.S. women’s athletes, who will select the final squad for Paris later this year, will aim for their eighth consecutive gold medal at the French Olympics.
Greiner, who missed the entire 2022 WNBA season after being imprisoned in Russia on drug charges, returned in 2023 and averaged 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for Phoenix last season.
The U.S. women’s roster for the Belgium Games includes seven Olympians, including five-time Olympic champion Diana Taurasi.
