Gemini Pro is now available for users in Europe, a month after its US launch.
Gemini Pro, one of Google’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) models, is now available to users in Europe as an upgrade to Bard, the company announced.
It is a multimodal, large-scale model that can understand and combine different types of information, including text, code, audio, images, and video.
Google is using Gemini to compete with OpenAI’s popular chatbot ChatGPT. A section of Gemini’s presentation page is dedicated to performance on various ability tests in reasoning, image understanding, and coding.
Gemini Pro is the most expensive tool, while Gemini Ultra is the largest model and can be used for more complex tasks, and Gemini Nano is better suited for on-device work.
Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the company will launch its “most capable” AI model, Gemini, in early December 2023.
They announced this week that Bard’s Gemini Pro will be available in 40 countries and over 230 countries and territories.
Delayed entry into European market
This isn’t the first time Google has introduced a product to the European market later.
Google Pay launched in the US in 2018, but European rollout was delayed until 2020 due to concerns about market dominance and compliance with regional payment regulations.
The company first released its chatbot Bard in July 2023, four months after it became widely available in the US and UK, after the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) raised privacy concerns.
The EU has strong data privacy regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force in 2018 and imposes strict rules on the collection, processing, and storage of personal data.

Fierce competition in the AI race
EU countries are currently debating future AI legislation, which includes several provisions aimed at protecting users from the potential misuse of AI.
