Strings within the Google app already indicated an official shutdown in February
summary
- Google Assistant driving mode is coming to an end in February, as indicated by a new banner on the home screen.
- The exact date of the closure is unknown, but it is expected to be later this month.
- Other parts of the driving mode, such as music controls, may remain when you shut down.
Google Assistant lost more than a dozen features in January, but Google isn’t finished differentiating its former flagship product. As previously revealed by hidden strings within the Google app, Google Assistant Driving Mode will be shutting down in February this year. The company has placed a banner on the driving mode home screen stating this.
As our regular tipster Summers spotted, a new banner will appear at the bottom of the familiar Google Assistant Driving Mode home screen that says, “This display will be retired in February.” At the moment, you can close it by tapping the × button inside it. There is no further information in the banner, nor are there any links that lead to a more detailed explanation.
The wording makes it unclear when exactly Driving Assistant mode will be phased out. It could close as early as February 1st, but if that was the plan, the company likely would have started displaying the banners sooner. With that in mind, we suspect the driving modes will be phased out later this month. Given that the banner only appears on the home screen in driving mode, other parts such as music controls are likely to remain intact.
As explained on Google’s help page, you can access the Google Assistant Driving Mode home screen by launching your navigation in Google Maps and pressing the four square buttons in the bottom right corner. This is the latest in a number of changes to Android’s driving-optimized interface, after Google shut down Android Auto for phones and subsequently removed the Assistant Driving Dashboard.
9to5Google previously discovered this exact announcement that the shutdown date for Google app version 14.52 is December 2023. It is now being rolled out more widely.
