Galaxy S24 Ultra titanium frame is cheaper than iPhone 15 Pro

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is Samsung’s first and only phone with a titanium frame. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that Apple used titanium for the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max last year. Still, drop tests on the Galaxy S24 Ultra show that the titanium frame can’t prevent glass from breaking, which should be great news for the phone’s durability. Of course, titanium will not protect the glass of his iPhone.

That said, the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s titanium appears to be four times cheaper than the iPhone 15 Pro. Not only that, Samsung’s use of titanium may be a marketing gimmick compared to Apple’s. Samsung uses plastic to join the titanium frame to the aluminum chassis. Apple, on the other hand, is bonding titanium directly to aluminum.

youtuber jerry rig all We took apart the Galaxy S24 Ultra to find out what type of titanium Samsung uses and how much you can expect.

He found that the Galaxy S24 Ultra features grade 2 titanium, compared to the grade 5 titanium that Apple used for the iPhone 15 Pro model. Grade 5 titanium is more durable than grade 2 titanium, but the latter is durable enough on its own. The clip also shows that grade 5 titanium is about four times more expensive than the grade 2 metal used by Samsung.

After melting down the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s chassis to remove the plastic and aluminum, the YouTuber discovered that Samsung used raw titanium worth about $3 to $5 per unit. By comparison, Apple probably uses $10 to $15 worth of titanium.

That’s not necessarily a problem. What could be a problem is the way Samsung builds the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s frame. As explained in the clip, there is plastic between the titanium and aluminum frames inside the phone. Does that mean the Galaxy S24 Ultra is less durable than the iPhone 15 Pro?

YouTubers say that both titanium exteriors are meant to be more aesthetically pleasing than anything else. Apple says, “The proliferation of solid-state may provide some strength gains. But with plastic intermediaries, Samsung definitely won’t get any more power.” This is the process Apple used to bond titanium directly to aluminum.

That’s a yes in terms of durability, but that doesn’t mean the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s titanium, plastic, and aluminum frame is shock-proof. The same YouTuber shows in another clip that the Galaxy S24 Ultra is very sturdy. In other words, it doesn’t bend.

Getting back to aluminum, this teardown makes me wonder if it’s worth upgrading to titanium. Note that the Galaxy S24 Ultra is $100 more expensive than its predecessor. Samsung may say that costs associated with using titanium are responsible for the price hike.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is $100 more expensive than the cheapest iPhone 14 Pro Max. But it’s actually the same price as the 256GB iPhone 14 Pro Max. The price of iPhone 15 Pro remains unchanged.

Recall that Apple replaced stainless steel in its Pro phones with titanium. As a result, the iPhone is slimmer than before. And the feeling of weight is also different. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has been changed from aluminum to titanium, but there is no change in weight. The device weighs about the same as the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
