Presidential and Vice Presidential Debate
The Ministry of Communications and Information (Kominfo) is facilitating sign language interpretation at the debates of presidential (kapre) and vice-presidential (kapre) candidates for the 2024 general elections. This measure is part of an effort to make elections more inclusive.
“The most important aspect of this initiative is that information related to the vision and mission of presidential candidates will be accessible to all groups, making it more inclusive. “You can ensure that you get a comprehensive understanding and political education from the pre-debate and making your choices during the actual voting,” said Usman Kanson, Director General of Information and Public Communications (IKP), Ministry of Communications and Information. The Government will ensure that all citizens have an equal opportunity to participate in the 2024 political elections. This includes recognizing and protecting the political rights of all citizens, regardless of gender, age, disability, ethnicity, religion or socio-economic background, provided they meet the requirements.
“Therefore, the 2024 elections will be conducted inclusively and friendly to individuals with disabilities,” Usman added.
Sign language interpretation activities for the presidential and vice-presidential debates held at the Ministry of Communications and Information are carried out in cooperation with the Indonesian Central Administration for the Deaf Welfare Movement (Gelkatin). This initiative specifically aims to realize the right of deaf people to access information about presidential and vice presidential debate events.
In this regard, the Ministry of Communications and Information, through the IKP Directorate General and GPR TV, is providing space, live streaming equipment, and other supporting facilities. This sign language interpretation activity has already been carried out at the 4th presidential and vice presidential debate on January 21, 2024, and will also be held at the 5th presidential debate scheduled for Sunday, February 4, 2024. The same will be implemented.
Laura Resmana Wijaya, chairperson of the Indonesian Sign Language Center (Pusubisindo), thanked the Ministry of Communications and Information for facilitating the activity. She sees this as a concrete step by the government to encourage the involvement of all sectors in nation-building.
“My hope is that this cooperation will not just be temporary, but will become a permanent national obligation. This will be a model for access to information in other regions, always involving and engaging our communities. I can do it,” she said when contacted on Saturday (3/3). February 2024).
Laura explained that the sign language interpretation activities for the presidential and vice-presidential debates are being organized by the Ministry of Communications and Information and Pusvishinde’s partner Gelkatin.
