Your view: Follow the science on climate change

Stephen Hawking once said: “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge.”

In today’s digital age, we have instant access to all the vast knowledge of the most prominent thinkers. We are all amazed and grateful for the modern advances in medicine, transportation, engineering, and manufacturing that are helping to make our lives richer and more comfortable. We always seek professional guidance when making important life decisions for our health and the welfare of our children. They have dedicated their lives to their profession and have the deep knowledge we need.

It is therefore clear that we need to follow the expert advice of climate scientists when it comes to issues such as climate change. Currently, 99.9% of scientists agree that burning fossil fuels is clearly warming the planet.

Yes, the climate is changing.

“People, wherever you roam, gather together.”

And acknowledge that the waters around you have grown.” (Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin”)

Did anyone know that ozone was being destroyed in the 1980s? Jonathan Shanklin, a meteorologist at the British Antarctic Survey, discovered that ozone I noticed that the levels started to drop. (The ozone layer forms an invisible protective shield on Earth, absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Without the ozone layer, life on Earth cannot exist.) He and other colleagues , man-made compounds called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were released into the atmosphere through the use of aerosols and cooling devices, contributing to ozone layer depletion. Like the fossil fuel lobby today and the tobacco lobby a few years ago, the CFC lobby attacked scientific findings and launched a disinformation campaign.

“If it’s worth saving time for you

Then you better start swimming, or you’ll sink like a stone.” (Bob Dylan)

Just as solving today’s climate problems is not limited to one country or continent, solving the hole in the ozone layer required a global effort. In 1987, the Montreal Protocol, signed by every country on earth, was adopted to protect the ozone layer by phasing out chemicals that deplete it.

“Fathers and mothers from all over the country, please come.”

And don’t criticize what you don’t understand.” (Bob Dylan)

Because the climate is changing.

As early as 1954, the fossil fuel industry was funding some of the world’s most basic climate science. The fossil fuel industry knows full well that its products are wreaking havoc on the Earth’s climate, yet it continues to mislead the public and regulators. The good news for us is that there are many solutions to weaning ourselves from burning fossil fuels as soon as possible. The transition to renewable energy will provide our future generations with a livable climate in which to thrive.

Because the climate is changing.
