Microsoft reportedly plans to allow users to designate its Copilot AI as the default digital assistant on their Android smartphones. According to a report from 9To5Google, a new beta version of the Copilot AI app for Android, which is currently being tested, will add Microsoft’s Copilot to the list of available assistants that can be set as default on Android smartphones.
This essentially means that users will immediately have the option to use Microsoft Copilot AI as their default personal assistant. This can be activated by long-pressing the power button or, in some cases, using a swipe up gesture from the bottom of the screen.

OpenAI’s GPT-4 model for text prompts and DALL-E 3 for text-to-image generation capabilities power Microsoft Copilot apps. However, this is not the first time that smartphone users will be able to launch his GPT-powered AI assistant with a tap or gesture.
Last month, British consumer technology brand Nothing rolled out a feature for users using the ChatGPT Android app on Nothing’s smartphones. This feature allows users to place the app’s quick settings widget on their home screen, deploying ChatGPT’s voice assistant functionality to their home screen without having to open the app.
Currently, Android smartphone users can choose their default digital assistant from Google Assistant, Bixby on Samsung devices, Amazon or DuckDuckGo, among others. Android users also have the option of using Google’s AI assistant instead of the regular one, as Google has rolled out a dedicated app for Gemini (previously called Bard).
Microsoft has not yet announced plans for general availability of Copilot’s default assistant feature. However, it will be available to more users in the coming weeks.
