Google introduced webcam functionality for Pixel smartphones last year, first appearing in Android 14 QPR1. This is a great feature, but when actually used on an Android device, the image quality leaves a lot to be desired. Thankfully, it looks like Google has taken the feedback to heart and is doing something about it in the next version of Android.

This could be a game-changer for users who want to capture high-quality video content using their existing hardware. Instead of investing in an expensive webcam, you can now use your mobile phone and save money. Naturally, HQ mode impacts battery life, so for long video sessions you may want to consider leaving it off to save power. However, Rahman’s testing shows that the video quality improves noticeably, so it may be worth turning on the feature selectively when performing tasks such as video streaming.
Please note that this feature is currently only available in the latest developer preview version. android 15. While we’d like to be confident that it makes it into the final build of the operating system, this isn’t the first time a feature has appeared in an Android DP or beta version and then disappeared.We’ll only know once if this becomes permanent android 15 If stability is reached or the feature is announced during Google I/O in May.
