One of the causes of lifestyle-related diseases is lack of sleep at night and sleep disorders, said K. Krishna Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Human Consciousness and Yoga Sciences, Mangalore University, here on Sunday. Said to be the most important. We are working on those obstacles.

Speaking at a workshop on “Yoga Therapy for Lifestyle-related Diseases” organized by the university’s faculty, he said that sleep duration varies from person to person. “You should get a good night’s sleep in the dark. It’s important for storing energy,” he said, adding, “When you sleep less, you grow less.”

Eating habits, sleep and wakefulness, work style, way of thinking, and entertainment were the basis of lifestyle. He said that an imbalance between the ‘trigunas’ (sattva, rajas and tamas) and the ‘tridoshas’ (vata, pitta and kapha) causes disorders.

Professor Sharma said that people should eat delicious and easily digestible foods at the right time. “Fasting and intermittent fasting can also help treat diseases,” he said. “Practice yoga at the same time every day. Maintain the habit of ‘mitahara’ and proper eating,” he said.

The professor said that practicing yoga can help prevent and treat diseases and promote good health.

He said the practice of ‘Vajrasana’ helps overcome problems related to defecation, digestion, headaches and tension. Tadasana helps cleanse the gastrointestinal tract. When practicing yoga, he said, it is important to synchronize breathing and asanas. “When practicing yoga, the style of practice is important. It varies from person to person,” he added.

Professor Sharma teaches Swastikasana, Vajrasana, Sputavajrasana, Tadasana I, Trikonasana, Parvakonasana, Purvottanasana, Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana, Dhanurasana, Bharadwajasana, Vipalikakarani, Utanapadasana, Halasana, Savasana, etc. He said he practices simple asanas and does Prayanayama like Kapalabhati. Jai, Anu Roma He Viloma, Vascutrika, Bhramari were helpful in preventing and overcoming several lifestyle diseases.

The department is planning a workshop on managing sinusitis through yoga on July 21 at the university.
