Xreal’s new AR glasses companion brings Android apps to life in 3D

What you need to know

  • Selling for $200, the Xreal Beam Pro turns apps from the Play Store into 3D experiences when used with Xreal’s AR glasses.
  • It works seamlessly with the Xreal Air and Xreal Air 2 (Pro and Ultra models) via USB-C, transforming them into spatial computers.
  • The device features dual 50MP cameras for 3D images and videos, and dual USB-C ports for simultaneous charging and connectivity.

Xreal has announced its latest AR product, the Beam Pro, but these aren’t your average pair of AR glasses – they’re an improved version of the Xreal Beam that addresses all the issues with the previous model.

At the Augmented World Expo (AWE) in Southern California this week, Xreal unveiled the Xreal Beam Pro, which costs $200 and can be used with Xreal’s AR glasses to turn apps from the Google Play Store into 3D experiences.

Beam Pro works with both Xreal Air and Xreal Air 2, including the Pro and Ultra models. With a simple USB-C to USB-C connection, these AR glasses turn into a powerful spatial computer running Android 14 powered by Xreal’s proprietary NebulaOS.

Xreal says that Beam Pro is the first AR device that seamlessly connects with the Play Store, allowing users to explore and enjoy a variety of content in a 3D environment.

The device may look like a regular Android smartphone, but it’s packed with AR-specific features: Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Spatial Companion Processor.

It also has a 6.5-inch 2400 x 1080 LCD display with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate. You can choose between 6GB or 8GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB of storage.

Xreal Beam Pro is more than just a companion device: the touchscreen acts as a control center, allowing you to manage the visuals of your Xreal Glasses, and it also functions like a regular smartphone screen, allowing you to navigate the Play Store app and easily change settings.

But its AR focus sets it apart from your average smartphone: Unlike your average smartphone, it has dual 50MP cameras designed to capture 3D images and spatial video, and it also has dual USB-C ports so you can charge the device and connect your Xreal Glasses at the same time.

The Beam Pro supports Wi-Fi 6 and has a 4300mAh battery. It has a base price of $199 and is expected to start shipping in mid-July.

While the competition is uncertain, Xreal is on a mission to make AR accessible to everyone, and the affordable Beam Pro embodies this goal – it could be the tipping point that takes AR technology from the niche market into the mainstream.

That said, it remains to be seen whether there will be any stiff competition in the AR glasses market, but Xreal is clearly on a mission to make augmented reality glasses accessible to everyone.

Unlike Meta, which is struggling to fill the app store, Xreal gives you direct access to the vast library of Play Store apps in 3D, positioning you at the forefront of the AR app ecosystem.

Moreover, Google’s recent unveiling of AR glasses at this year’s I/O conference suggests that the company is also focusing on AR, which could intensify the competition.
