Western Oregon University’s Aquarium Science Program received a grant from the Western Foundation’s Competitive Grants Program to create an exhibit aquarium in the lobby of the Natural Sciences Building.
The Aquarium Science program trains students in the science of aquatic animal husbandry. Graduates will be trained to become aquarists who manage aquariums and care for saltwater and freshwater flora and fauna. This program, in conjunction with Oregon Coast Community College (OCCC), combines core biology, business, and general education classes. Students complete their final year coursework at her OCCC in Newport.
The 100-gallon aquarium is rented from OCCC. Currently, he is breeding two Siamese algae that eat Siamese algae, and they can live for about 8 to 10 years and grow up to 17 centimeters. It is mainly found in southeastern Africa. There is also a rope fish in this tank. This fish lives about 15 to 20 years and can grow up to 15 inches. Ropefish are found in West and Central Africa. The fish is currently being cared for by Brooke Belluomini, an aquarium science major.
Additionally, dozens of tiny bladder snails move around the tank, keeping it clean. They have a lifespan of about two years and are found in freshwater habitats around the world. The aquarium is planted with the common ornamental plant Elodea (also called aquatic plants).
