World Wetlands Day 2024: Wetlands are primarily characterized by ecosystems covered by water. Water is the main controlling factor in these ecosystems inhabited by plants and animals. Wetlands can be both freshwater, marine, and coastal and consist of swamps, wet grasslands, swamps, coral reefs, and mangroves. Man-made sites such as rice fields, reservoirs, salt pans, and fishponds are also part of wetlands. Wetlands make a huge contribution not only to the planet but also to the lives of people and animals. They are very important to the environment. World Wetlands Day is observed every year to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands to human life and the planet.

date:

World Wetlands Day is observed every year on February 2nd. This year’s special day is Friday.

history:

Although wetlands cover only 6 percent of the earth, more than 40 percent of plant and animal species live and breed in wetlands. The Ramsar Convention, named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, was an international treaty for the conservation of wetlands. This treaty he signed on February 2, 1971, and this date has been observed ever since. On August 30, 2021, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 75/317, designating February 2 as World Wetlands Day.

significance:

Wetlands are responsible for flood control, water purification, and water regulation. However, wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests. Human drainage, pollution, overfishing, and overexploitation of natural resources are some of the reasons why wetlands are endangered. On this day, we must pledge to protect wetlands and take the necessary precautions to ensure they thrive and continue to contribute to a better planet. This year’s theme is “Wetlands and human well-being.”
