WEST LIBERTY, WV – April 2, 2024 – Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to the first annual WLU Zoo Science Open House on Thursday, April 4 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Arnett Hall.
The open house will take place through Arnett Hall, where visitors will move through a series of stations to learn more about the program, including many animal interactions, demonstrations, and student research. By completing a station, visitors will be entered into a drawing to win prizes. Zoo Science major students and faculty are excited to share their programs with the community.
“We want to see as many people as possible come through this door. We want to show the community that we exist and share what we’re doing. We’re always excited about that. Everyone is welcome to come and learn, and this is a resource for students and the community to connect,” said Lauren Mort, WLU Animal Care Specialist.
“We feel like we’re a hidden gem right now, and we don’t want to be hidden away. We want to showcase all of our student activities and the opportunities they have. Open House to get it started “We felt that was the best way to do it. The goal is to make this an annual event that celebrates our faculty and students,” Molt added.
“I’m so excited for the rest of campus to see how passionate we are about maintaining our animal collections. It’s not just about playing with the animals, it’s a valuable experience that many other facilities don’t offer.” It’s an experience,” said Matthew Shuttleworth, zoo science events coordinator and lab instructor.
By completing WLU’s unique zoo science curriculum, students develop a skill set that prepares them for employment in zoos and shelters, wildlife rehabilitation and restoration, federal and state conservation agencies, and graduate schools in ecology and conservation science.
