With the return of Sunbird, Android users may soon be able to use iMessage on their iPhone as well.

Sunbird, once infamous for security flaws in its attempt to bring iMessage to Android, is making a comeback. Despite a rocky past, Sunbird announced plans to relaunch his iMessage service for Android on April 5th.

Back in 2022, Sunbird entered the industry with an ambitious goal of extending iMessage to Android users. However, the app faced serious security issues that led to its sudden shutdown shortly after its launch. These issues, which included access to user-shared media and visibility of real-time messages, forced Sunbird to suspend operations indefinitely.

Announcement of re-release of Sunbird

Now, after reevaluating its technical implementation and organizational processes, Sunbird is resurfacing. 9to5google reports that invitations to the revamped service will be gradually distributed to those on the waiting list.

In a press release, Sunbird highlighted the platform’s ability to bridge the gap between the Android and Apple ecosystems and facilitate secure communications within the Apple environment. Although the changes made in this release are not detailed, Sunbird ensures a robust and secure unified messaging experience for its users.

The company replaced the old architecture with a new “AV2” architecture that incorporates a secure messaging standard known as MQTTS. Additionally, Sunbird emphasizes that unencrypted messages are never stored on disk or in a database, and static files are encrypted both in transit and at rest.

To strengthen its security efforts, Sunbird has tapped the expertise of CIPHER, an independent security consultancy, and appointed former Google Engineering Director Jared Jordan as an official advisor. These organizational changes demonstrate Sunbird’s commitment to addressing past shortcomings and prioritizing the security of our users.
