  • A Texas woman is seeking more than $1 million in damages for the death of her husband at a Mexican resort.
  • The wrongful death lawsuit alleges he was electrocuted in the hot tub and drowned.
  • The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of three companies associated with the resort.

A Texas woman is seeking more than $1 million in damages after she claims she watched her husband get electrocuted and drown in a hot tub during a family vacation in Mexico.

In a wrongful death lawsuit filed in El Paso County District Court in Texas and first reported by Inside Edition, Lizette Zambrano sues three companies associated with Sonoran Sea Resort for negligence.

On June 11, 2024, her husband, Jorge Guillen, died while vacationing at a resort in the northern Mexican state of Sonora.

According to the lawsuit, once Guillen entered the hot tub, he was “exposed to an electrical current in the water,” which caused him to flip upside down and sink underwater.

Zambrano tried to grab her husband from the water, but she herself was electrocuted and fell into the Jacuzzi, according to the lawsuit.

Another customer was able to pull Zambrano out, but failed in an attempt to pull Guillen out using a crucifix or other object, according to the lawsuit.

“The metal of the object carried electrical current and began to electrocute rescuers,” the lawsuit states.

Zambrano alleges in her lawsuit that resort staff failed to activate the hot tub’s emergency shutoff device or attempt to rescue her or her husband.

Guillen drowned and Zambrano was hospitalized but survived the incident, according to the lawsuit.

According to the lawsuit, the defendants were negligent by failing to warn about faulty wiring in the hot tubs and breached their duty of care by failing to maintain the resort in a proper and safe condition.

Casago, the vacation rental company that operates the resort, did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.

Guillen is described in the lawsuit as a “hardworking, loving, affectionate, caring, energetic, supportive, patient and attentive father.”

The couple’s family has raised more than $55,000 through a GoFundMe campaign, raising money to bring Guillen’s body home and to cover Zambrano’s medical expenses.

At the time of writing, a notice was posted on Sonoran Sea Resort’s website indicating that the swimming pool and hot tub were temporarily closed.
