TL;DR
- Two people have been found guilty of defrauding Apple of millions of dollars worth of iPhones.
- The duo sent more than 5,000 fake iPhones to Apple for repair, and Apple replaced them with real iPhones.
- This isn’t the first time Apple has fallen victim to the same scam.
As the saying goes, once you fool me, shame on you. You fooled me twice, shame on you. Apple has once again fallen victim to a repair scam that replaces fake devices with genuine models such as the iPhone 15.
Two Maryland residents, both Chinese nationals, were convicted by a federal jury in the District of Columbia of attempting to defraud Apple, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Haotian Sun, 33, and Pengfei Xue, 33, are charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and mail fraud, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
The two were allegedly involved in a “sophisticated scheme” to send fake iPhones to Apple for repair. Apple would then replace these counterfeits with genuine iPhones. Over two and a half years, the pair reportedly turned over more than 5,000 cell phones with the intent of causing “losses in excess of $3 million.”
The two used various pseudonyms to make sure no one found out. However, they arrested him on December 5, 2019, and his sentence is scheduled to begin on June 21, 2024.
As mentioned earlier, this isn’t the first time Apple has run into this problem. The tech giant has experienced this scam at least three other times. One might think that one of the world’s largest companies would have a way to tell the real thing from the fake.
