On the eve of his first criminal trial scheduled to begin in New York on Monday, former President Donald Trump continues to handle six civil and criminal cases as he looks to return to the White House. His frequent court appearances have made it a de facto campaign stop, from which he can taunt Democrats.
Four criminal trials with a total of 88 charges are pending. In Manhattan, he faces 34 charges alleging he falsified business records to pay hush money to women who say they had sex with him. No other exams have been officially scheduled yet.
In three other criminal cases, prosecutors are battling with Trump’s lawyers over legal claims that could be delayed until after the Nov. 5 election. The Supreme Court is considering whether he has immunity as a former president.
Mr. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges. But if the trial is conducted as vigorously as prosecutors hope, it could keep the trial away from campaign activities for months at a time.

So far, Trump’s court record is 0-2. He lost a defamation lawsuit against her by columnist E. Jean Carroll and was ordered to pay her $83 million. He also lost a civil fraud lawsuit brought by New York State Attorney General Letitia James and was ordered to pay $454 million. He is appealing both sentences.

Trump is suspected of falsifying business records in March 2023 to conceal hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougall, who claim they had sexual relations with Trump before the 2016 election. He was indicted on 34 felonies by a Manhattan grand jury.
Trump allegedly arranged for former lawyer Michael Cohen to pay Daniels $130,000 and McDougal $150,000 to silence the women’s claims.
Trump maintains his innocence and denies having an affair. He said he paid Mr. Cohen’s retainers and that his lawyer arranged the payments. But Mr. Cohen has testified that there were no vassals and that Mr. Trump directed the payments to the women.

Mar-a-Lago Secret Documents Case ∣ May 2024

Felony counts: 40
Trump was indicted on 40 counts for storing hundreds of classified documents in his Mar-a-Lago mansion when he left the White House in 2021.
Mr. Trump maintains that it was his personal property that declassified the records.
Special Counsel Jack Smith of the Justice Department indicted President Trump on charges of knowingly maintaining national defense records, violating the Espionage Act and conspiracy to obstruct justice.
U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon, who is assigned to the case, continues to hear arguments on evidence, which could potentially postpone the trial from its tentative May 20 start date.
Mr. Smith had proposed starting on July 8, and Mr. Trump’s lawyers had proposed starting on August 12, although they wanted to delay it until after the election.

Trump was indicted on four counts of conspiring to steal the 2020 election from President Joe Biden.
Mr. Smith charged Mr. Trump with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstructing and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
Trump has argued that he is immune from charges because he was president at the time of the acts that preceded and included the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan and the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, which are overseeing the case, each ruled that he does not have immunity. However, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on April 25th.
The trial has been adjourned until the judge makes a decision, which could come in May or June. Chutkan promised Trump two months of pretrial preparation after the verdict, delaying a potential trial until at least August. Depending on when and what the court decides, the charges could be dismissed or the trial could be postponed further.
