Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is working on developing media upload quality options that will allow users to share photos and videos in their preferred quality by default. WABetaInfo has discovered a feature in development in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.5.6. This feature is currently available through the Google Play Beta program.
WhatsApp will add an option to select media upload quality on the messaging app’s Storage & Data page, according to a screenshot of the feature shared by the website. The high quality setting says you can get up to 5x more space for photos and up to 2x more space for videos.
This unreleased feature builds on the work WhatsApp has done in recent months. Last year, we introduced the ability to share HD photos and HD videos in chats. However, a slight inconvenience is that users have to select the high quality option every time they want to share media.
That said, WhatsApp’s media upload quality option is not yet available to testers, and there’s no word on its release date. Although this feature reduces the number of taps for users, users still need to use media sharing. Send your video in its original quality using the document.
That’s because modern flagship smartphones can record videos at up to 8K resolution, while WhatsApp’s HD media option offers resolutions as high as 720p. Therefore, WhatsApp allows you to send media as documents with a maximum file size of 2 GB.
The instant messaging app is also working on passkey support and third-party chat support to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). WhatsApp has further enhanced its channel features, adding voice notes, polls, and support for up to 16 admins.
