What you need to know
- Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger are experiencing partial outages, affecting most users.
- Sending and receiving multimedia messages such as photos, videos and voice notes appears to be at the heart of the outage.
- Whatsapp said in a tweet that it was working to resolve the issue and that some users have already started seeing service return to normal on their devices.
Users of two Meta platforms reported today that they are experiencing issues sending and receiving multimedia messages and voice notes on WhatsApp and Messenger.
As spotted by 9to5Google, the outage began around 12pm ET on Monday (June 27). The outage affected both services, appearing to affect 82% of Whatsapp users and 79% of Facebook Messenger users around 1pm ET.
Several users also took to X to express their frustration over the ongoing outage.
However, it’s important to note that regular text messages were not affected by the outage; for users who did experience an outage, photos, videos, and audio messages either didn’t upload to the platform or were stuck loading forever.
Android Central staff tried sending the image using WhatsApp, but it took several minutes for it to reach the user instead of being delivered instantly, although WhatsApp told X that it was aware of the issue and was working on a solution.
Some users have already confirmed that the service has returned to normal, and the situation is expected to improve within the next few hours.
These are great media distribution issues and we are working to resolve them as quickly as possible.June 27, 2024
