ATLANTA — If you’ve recently flown out of Atlanta Airport, the world’s busiest airport, you’ve likely seen major construction work underway.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is in the midst of ATL Next, which will spend billions of dollars to expand and upgrade the airport.

Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach Attended ATL Industry Day at the airport on Tuesday. This annual event includes panels, exhibits, and sessions for small businesses and contractors.

“Get educated on how to get it. And if a large company needs subcontractors or something like that, we are involved to some degree in that process,” said Osel Fleming of Top Notch Home Services.

Airport officials are also offering a preview of some of the upcoming construction and the changes passengers will see in ongoing and impending major projects.

While exterior work on the domestic terminal has been completed and all security checkpoints have been renovated, the most notable changes currently underway include the construction of a huge parking deck on the site of the former South Economy site. It will be.

The seven-deck structure nearly doubles the parking space and capacity. Inside the airport, construction began late last year on one of the largest projects to date, the D Concourse expansion, which he said cost $1.3 billion.

“They’re the ones who actually get the job done,” said Frank Rucker, senior deputy general manager for airport infrastructure.

Trending stories:

Attendees at ATL Industry Day will be able to connect and learn directly from airport staff and leaders who make decisions and close contracts.

“We essentially need to consider how to absorb and respond to increasing forecasts and move forward into the future,” Rucker said.

Other projects underway include improvements to the underground plane train between terminals and work about to begin on improvements to the MARTA station, which will be closed for six weeks.

Airport and MARTA officials are scheduled to hold a press conference on Friday to announce more details about the closure.
