What Android apps don’t already have theme icons? [Poll]

[ad_1]

Android Material You-themed icons have come a long way since their debut in Android 12, now supporting even more apps. But are there still many Android apps without theme icons? What is missing on your home screen?

Android themed icons are also available on Pixel, Samsung’s Galaxy devices, and several other Android skins. This option requires developers to enable support and will mix colors and app icons to match the rest of the wallpaper-inspired Material U color palette. This is a very quick and easy way to create a cohesive theme on your Android device, but it can also be very frustrating if your app doesn’t support this option.

My own home screen is lucky enough that the main screen is covered in apps that support themed icons. I never expected Spotify, Twitter/X, and Threads to support this option, but they all do. It looks great on all my devices, but everything falls apart on the second page.

On that second page, my home screen layout over the years has been about a 50/50 split in thematic icon support. Google apps like Wallet, Maps, Keep, and Fitbit are all supported, and there are also a number of third-party apps that have been supported for a while, including AccuWeather, UDisc, Reddit, and Cash App. I was also really happy to see Meta step up his support on Instagram and Facebook last year.

But even after all this time, there are still many apps that don’t support themed icons on Android.

Some of the biggest offenders on my home screen include:

  • Amazon
  • feedly
  • GeForce Now
  • Netflix
  • Venmo
  • GPay
  • PayPal

There are many others. Games in particular don’t tend to use this feature, but given that icons tend to be more complex, it’s understandable not to do these icons in games. But as the years have passed, it’s becoming harder to forgive apps that ignore this completely.

One of the things that has been frustrating me lately is Microsoft Copilot. This AI service is folded out on my home screen alongside ChatGPT and now Google Gemini, sticking out painfully next to them. Microsoft as a whole has declined to participate in this feature, with Office apps, Bing, OneDrive, and Outlook all skipping it. As far as I know, the Edge browser is the only Microsoft app on Android that supports themed icons. In my personal opinion, this is a little crazy. That’s because Microsoft has every reason to continue to deliver new features for Android, given its investment in Samsung and its own Android devices, which the company claims to be “hard at”. There is no doubt about it.

Google is working behind the scenes on an option that would force all apps to support this feature, but it hasn’t debuted yet. Users can also manually create their own themed icons for their apps, but it’s not that easy.

Admittedly, themed icons aren’t for everyone. With this feature turned on, I think it’s easy to lose track of apps if you don’t know where they are. This is especially true for Samsung devices, where One UI does not apply these icons system-wide. just This is the wrong approach. Google got this right and doesn’t even apply themed icons to the app drawer, they only appear when the app is placed on the home screen.

But what about you? How many apps don’t have themed icons on your home screen? Vote in the poll below and leave a comment for the biggest home screen offenders.
