We traveled aboard Europe’s new sleeper trains – this is our opinion

Night Jet Train has a clear purpose. That means taking passengers from one city to the next with minimal hassle and maximum privacy. Due to departure times, there is no dining car onboard, and there are no plans to introduce one, but microwave meals such as wraps, sandwiches, spaghetti bolognese, tagliatelle with cheese and vegetarian chili can all be purchased for less than 10 euros. . Other than that, there’s plenty of popcorn, Pringles, peanuts and Haribo for late-night snackers who want to open a can of Stiegl while the trains rumble through the night.

I looked up and down the hallways, searching for people, but all I could hear was the noise of the train. Ideal for business travelers with early morning meetings, this vehicle did not have the usual mix of audio, phone calls, and movies in the background. Here you jump, close the door and don’t come out until morning. Fishing for a free paper bag containing slippers, flannel, an eye mask, and earplugs (and a small chocolate wafer), I plugged my phone into the wireless charging pouch, plugged in the earplugs, and snuggled under the duvet as per Pillow’s advice. There it was written: Enjoy tomorrow too. ”

Despite having been on over 200 sleeper trains, I’m still a terribly light sleeper, but for the first time in months I didn’t feel shaken awake, shaken, or irritated. I was able to sleep for over 8 hours without being disturbed until 7am. A voice from the hallway. Curious as to where we were, we pushed up the blinds and spotted the train leaving from Passau making a turn at the confluence of the Danube, Ilz and Inn rivers, known as the Dreiflüsseeg. Austria to my left, Germany to my right. I watched the sun warm the sky through the forest and the deer dotted around the foreground. Once the fog clears, the day begins, and as we enjoy breakfast of homemade ham and cheese sandwiches, we watch the villages and towns come and go, the curtains open, the horses being fed, and the arrival at the nursery. I absorbed every detail of what the children were doing. .

Despite my misgivings, the shower was hot and powerful with shower gel in a dispenser. I exited the train exactly as Nightjet intended. Feel refreshed and ready for the day. For 3.50 euros (cash only), leave your luggage at Vienna Central Station, walk to the Belvedere Palace, see Klimt and Egon Schiele, then have lunch at the nearby deli Edelgreislerei Opochensky. I took it. With a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the restaurant serves hearty daily specials featuring spring vegetable strudel, pork knuckle and dumplings. It’s the perfect place to fill up on cheese, wine, and terrine boards before catching your train.

Single Comfort Plus compartment berths start from £443 per person and tickets are available from omio.co.uk. Monisha Rajesh is the author of Around the World in 80 Trains, published by Bloomsbury for £10.99.
