“We affectionately call him ‘our little grumpy uncle.”’ Kayla Johnson, the winner of this year’s Cutest Pet Contest, is a Shih Tzu-Chihuahua mix. He talked about his dog Samson (14 years old). At 12 weeks old, she only weighed 3 pounds and was so small that she was afraid to jump off the curb.

“It really reflects his personality as an older dog,” Kayla said. “He’s stubborn in his own endearing way and likes to have things his way. He’s very particular.”

Samson, also known as the “Lewis and Clark Explorer” for his lifelong habit of checking his entire large garden every day, regardless of the weather, shares his family with Tucker, a 5-year-old miniature poodle/Shih Tzu.

Favorite snack: pig ears

Favorite toy: stuffed duck and sock monkey

Favorite subject: Napping in the sun and especially taking car rides to Grammy and Grumpy’s house
