Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta Platforms has announced that organizations that purchase the post “boost” feature from the iPhone version of its social media apps will now have to pay an additional fee. The additional cost is to pay Apple, the App Store operator, an additional 30% service fee.

Mark Zuckerberg’s social media giant said advertisers can avoid Apple’s service fees by promoting content from Instagram and Facebook through the browser.

What is a boosted post and how does it change?Meta offers Boosted Posts products to businesses and individuals who want to promote their posts and profiles on apps like Facebook and Instagram. This advertising tool allows brands to buy and create ads on the company’s platform without the need for campaigns through an ads manager.

In 2022, Apple announced updated App Store guidelines. As part of the change, advertisers who power their posts through iPhone will be billed by Apple instead of Meta.

The company explained that those who want to boost their posts through the iOS app will need to add up-front funds and pay a fee before their boosted posts are published. Meta plans to charge an additional 30% to cover his Apple transaction fees for preloading funds into iOS.

Meta said it will begin implementing the change in the U.S. this month. The company also confirmed that other markets will be subject to this fee later this year.

“You must follow Apple’s guidelines or remove boosted posts from your app,” the company said in a statement. We don’t want to remove the ability to boost posts. Removing it can make this feature harder to discover and deprive small businesses of a valuable way to advertise their business. ”
