Rumor has it that Huawei is developing a high-end VR/AR headset to compete with products from Apple and Meta.
Trademark filings indicate it will be called “Vision Pro,” and it’s likely made to be launched as a China-only product, at least initially. It’s made with high-quality components, including Sony’s micro-OLED 4K display, and appears to be designed to be lighter and cheaper than Apple’s Vision Pro. The name has some blemishes in China as well, and is sure to annoy at least a few people in Cupertino.

It is cool. I love the concept of VR and AR. This allows people to experience things virtually that they might not be able to do in the real world of Meat Universe, making playing the game a huge perk. However, I have mixed feelings about the equipment available for using VR. It gets better with each hardware cycle, and Huawei’s premium headset, which doesn’t cost as much as a used car, is a welcome idea.
That being said, I’m rooting for Huawei to release this product, but it’s too late for anyone outside of China. Even if Huawei doesn’t want to die, Huawei is finished.
In 2020, Huawei was the largest smartphone manufacturer on the planet and one of the world’s largest high-tech product OEMs. The company made the exceptional phones, tablets, laptops, accessories, and equipment that companies like AT&T needed to provide phone service and the Internet.
That was before the crash. Rightly or wrongly, the US government has determined that Huawei products, particularly its 5G communications equipment, pose a security risk. I don’t know if that happened, and neither do you. All I know is that the people whose job it is to know about things like this told us there was a problem. I don’t think that’s technically true. Because we also know that Huawei was trying to corner the US “5G market” by selling good equipment at good prices. Many wealthy people would not have liked that one bit.
The United States has blacklisted Huawei, banning companies that want to sell products here from doing business with it. This means we do not buy or sell parts or provide software at any price. If you do so, you will also be blacklisted.
Other countries followed suit, and even if Huawei was not blacklisted, hurdles were put in place to slow or stall Huawei’s presence in large parts of the world. By the end of 2020, Huawei’s market share had fallen to 8%, and by the beginning of 2021, its name had disappeared from every chart you saw, lumping the company into the “other.”
Huawei has also done a lot to damage its reputation. The company was either convicted of intellectual property theft or settled out of court with Motorola, Cisco, PanOptis, and MPEG LA. The jury also found that the company “misappropriated” trade secrets from T-Mobile, and the U.S. Department of Justice found evidence of financial fraud and violations of sanctions against Iran. Further evidence suggests that Huawei may have had economic ties to North Korea.
Finally, Meng Wanzhou appeared. Wanzhou was Huawei’s vice chairman of the board and chief financial officer (CFO), and the daughter of the company’s founder. She was placed under house arrest by Canadian authorities, and the United States sought her extradition.
Amid the chaotic extradition hearings, the United States announced that it had resolved the case against Manshu. As part of the deal, Ms. Wanzhou admitted to lying to HSBC (Hong Kong Bank) in order to continue financial transactions in the United States, and these statements were evidence that Huawei was violating trade sanctions with Iran. confirmed.
Regardless of what you think about these other companies or the U.S. government, you have to admit that this is a bad thing, especially for companies that are under intense scrutiny due to their ties to China’s state intelligence agencies.
When all the dust settled, Huawei was unable to make technology products that would sell in the West. Sales plummeted even in countries where Huawei products were available.
This does not mean that the company makes a bad product. Their phones and tablets are some of the best you can buy at a great advantage compared to products from Samsung and Apple. They are just using his 100% home-grown operating system with software intended for the Chinese market, without any support or services from Google. After all, it’s hard to sell Android products that aren’t supported by Google and don’t have access to the Play Store.
The same goes for VR/AR headsets. We don’t know if Huawei’s Vision Pro will be equipped with Android, but there’s a good chance it will be. Huawei can do whatever it wants with the free and open version of Android, and the OS should work well on headsets as well. Meta uses it in Quest 3 because it works so well.
When it comes to software and the great things you can do with it, you should expect a customized experience for China. Companies like Meta and Rovio aren’t allowed to offer apps to Huawei, and even TikTok would have to jump hurdles to do business with Huawei and survive in the US.
This doesn’t mean it’s bad, but it does mean it’s not what you’re used to or what you already like. In countries where Huawei products can be purchased, such as Belgium and Mexico, there are already many people who have not purchased Huawei products. While a cheaper (and perhaps better) version of Apple’s flashy new VR/AR headset may appeal to some, consumers are likely to continue ignoring the company.
This is unfortunate, but also a harsh reality. My personal feelings aside (I think Huawei phones and other Android products should never have been banned), even if they were released, the sanctions would kill Western sales before they were released. There is no doubt about it.
Perhaps Huawei will be able to save itself in the future, or something will change and the US will change its position towards the company. Maybe not.
Either way, VR headsets won’t save the company or create new revenue streams.
