I followed my visit to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to the IEEE Region 8 conference in Vienna, then to Edinburgh for the IEEE medal presentation, then took the train to Glasgow to speak at Strathclyde University. From there I headed to Colombia, South America to attend his IEEE Region 9 conference. These were all new cities for me, so I was very excited to talk to his IEEE members from two continents.

In Vienna, I first visited the IEEE office (see image below). This office also serves as the office of Austrian Standards (a sign on the building read “Welcome to the House of Standards”). During my visit with IEEE staff, I learned about the potential opportunities for IEEE standards and the potential for exciting opportunities for IEEE technical societies to encourage their members to conduct research and measurements that can support new industry standards.

After visiting the IEEE offices in Vienna, I joined other IEEE leaders who participated in the Region 8 IEEE conference (consisting of the IEEE sections of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa), as well as other regional leaders and members of the IEEE Board of Directors. Ta. . So we discussed topics of general interest to IEEE, as well as topics specific to Region 8. The great diversity this region represents provides a great opportunity to shape the IEEE to serve the needs and provide value to its members in many different societies and countries. People who research and commercialize technology to achieve our mission of “advancing technology for the benefit of humanity.”

From Vienna, I traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, to present the IEEE Masura Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award to Steve B. Farber and Sophie M. Wilson at the 2024 IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA). This is the second time I have worked with him on his 32-bit ARM RISC microprocessor design, which now has billions of applications in data centers, enterprises, industrial and consumer electronics. It is used in many applications. The first time was at the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE) in January 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. As two of the medal winners were unable to attend the January event in person, the presentation took place at the HPCA in Edinburgh.

From Edinburgh I took a short train ride to Glasgow, Scotland, where I attended as a guest of IEEE members from Strathclyde University. The conference was organized by his IEEE Fellow Dr. Tariq Durrani and included university tours, interaction with university students, talks on IEEE, and the upcoming revolution in computer architecture based on developments in memory and storage. It included a lecture on the changes that have taken place. technology. The University is participating in an event in honor of Lord Kelvin (William Thompson) in June 2024. The photo below shows me next to the bust of Lord Kelvin at the university.

Strathclyde College’s motto is “a place of useful learning” from founder John Anderson, a professor at nearby University of Glasgow, who gave the founding instructions and property in 1796. I left most of it behind. University (see image of university building below). Many important engineers came from the Glasgow area, including James Watt, who helped make the steam engine a useful technology that powered the First Industrial Revolution.

As a result of this trip to Glasgow, we may be doing other events in Glasgow this year. These include IEEE’s possible participation in his 2024 World Science Fiction Convention, to be held in Glasgow in August 2024. At his SF Worldcon in 2024, he met one of the SF author guests of honor, and some of his local IEEE members were able to connect with the organizers of this conference. Many IEEE members, including myself, got into technology inspired by science fiction movies, TV shows, and books. It seems like a good idea for IEEE to be present at an event like this that inspires future and current engineers.

I flew from Glasgow to Heathrow Airport and from there headed to Bogata, Colombia for the IEEE Region 9 conference in the small Colombian town of Paipa. There I had the opportunity to meet IEEE leaders from all over Latin America, experience the different experiences of his IEEE in Latin America, and meet his IEEE members from all grade levels. IEEE Region 9 aims to provide value to our diverse membership and help them and their societies advance technology.

We took a short tour of some nearby historical sites in the afternoon. This included a visit to the site of the battle of Pantano de Vargas, not far away. There, Simón Bolívar and his army won a battle against a much larger Spanish army. 1819. This was an important battle in the effort to liberate Latin America from Spanish rule. IEEE represents a very diverse membership from countries around the world. During my visits to meetings in IEEE Region 8 (Europe and Africa) and Region 9 (Latin America), I was struck by the energy and enthusiasm of the members and how they bring their respective cultures together to advance technology for the benefit of humanity. I have seen them working together inside.
