Verizon Business Leverages Innovative Content Distribution to Simulcast NHL Games April 14-17, Booth #W2042
NEW YORK, April 14, 2024 (Globe Newswire) — Verizon Business, Recent Partnership announcement Co-innovation with the National Hockey League (NHL) is on full display with a new 5G-enabled cloud broadcast solution. Running on AWS Wavelength Zones, a mobile edge computing service that provides ultra-low-latency applications for 5G devices, the solution increases on-ice content capture-to-broadcast speeds from seconds to milliseconds. This will bring about major changes to the broadcasting industry. .
“Innovations in production and distribution ultimately highlight the power of our network for content owners like the NHL,” said Iris Meyer, chief product and marketing officer, Verizon Business. “Through cloud-based content distribution, we enable them to innovate, bringing new perspectives, angles and experiences to fans around the world.”
The traditional broadcast television industry is experiencing major operational changes with the rise of streaming services, devices, and next-generation IP video production tools. All of these tools require moving and processing large amounts of data instantly.
“Providing fans with a premium experience, whether they’re sitting rinkside or from the comfort of their own home, has become synonymous with the NHL,” said Grant Nodin, NHL Senior Vice President of Technology. “By partnering with Verizon Business to accelerate content delivery from the cloud, he can find innovative ways to create content and design experiences for fans.”
The NHL collaborated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to produce the first-ever live-to-air cloud broadcast of the March 22 game between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Washington Capitals. This technology allows the NHL to broadcast games through AWS Elemental MediaConnect. High-quality live video transmission services give the league the scale to maximize centralized production staff in the league’s offices and production headquarters.
Through secure and reliable connectivity, live cloud production will enable the NHL to leverage distributed production and operations personnel for future broadcasts. Additionally, rapid delivery through cloud efficiency allows the league to streamline content distribution to social media channels and new platform partners, creating an enhanced fan experience.
“Live cloud production enables the NHL to use the best combination of resources to produce high-quality content from virtually anywhere and at virtually any scale,” said Julie, Global Head of Sports at AWS. Souza said. “The speed of Verizon 5G opens new opportunities for the continued adoption and deployment of live cloud production in sports and other areas.”
At the 2024 NAB Show, a demo of building a live cloud production environment in collaboration with AWS, NHL, and their partners will be on display at the Verizon booth (#W2042).
