Vanderbilt University last week announced plans to create a new interdisciplinary university focused on computer science, AI and data science. This is to strengthen research in these fields and prepare students for an increasingly technologically integrated job market.
The university said in a news release last week that the new School of Connected Computing will focus on a “computing-for-all approach,” collaborating with Vanderbilt’s other schools and colleges to explore areas such as AI. The company said it would advance this and meet growing demand among employers. Applicants with advanced technical degrees and qualifications.

According to the announcement, the School of Connected Computing will begin its search for a dean by late August, with Dean and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs C. The creation of this new college comes as higher education institutions across the U.S. continue to ramp up programming related to AI and data science. At State Cybersecurity and Pace University, officials are preparing to launch a new AI lab on the New York City campus.
Officials said in a news release that new universities specializing in these technology areas will accelerate research and allow universities to more effectively leverage advanced computing in other areas.
“The creation of this interdisciplinary, ‘transversal’ university is a major turning point not only for the College of Engineering but for the university as a whole,” Roy said. “The future of education, research, and thinking in all fields is now intrinsically tied to, and will continue to be profoundly influenced by, the knowledge and power of computing.” The idea of ”computing for people” is fundamental to the future of learning. ”
A special committee made up of faculty from across the university will decide on additional details about the university, including departments and degree programs, according to the announcement. Additionally, the university will establish a Computing Catalyst Working Group, led by Vice President for Research and Innovation Padma Raghavan, to seek input from faculty leaders on strategies to expand Vanderbilt’s computing resources.
