GOLETA, Calif. – It’s always good to be home.
“It’s great to be home,” Ryan Neuschul began. “Being at my house, being at my homeschool, watching the young kids in my water polo club, playing here in high school, it’s pretty cool to see a sign with your name on it. ”
Neuschl was playing for the U.S. national team, which defeated Australia 10-4 in an exhibition game in front of a packed crowd at Dos Pueblos High School.
Neuschl, a 2018 DP High School graduate, is a defensive specialist who scored his only goal late in the first quarter to give Team USA a 4-1 lead.
Neuschl laughed and said, “It’s been a long time since I heard cheers like this after scoring a goal.”
Maddie Musselman and Maggie Steffens each scored three goals in the win.
Both teams are preparing for the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer.
Team USA is the three-time defending champion.
Ryan’s older sisters Kylie and Jamie won gold medals at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, respectively.
“They set the bar very high,” smiled younger sister Ryan. “I’m so proud to be their sister, my little sister, and just continue on this journey.”
Reserve goalkeeper Amanda Longan, from Moorpark, also enjoyed a trip down memory lane.
She played with Ryan at the Santa Barbara 805 Water Polo Club, founded by Kathy Neuschl (Ryan’s mother).
“It was really great to be back here and play in front of 805 people,” said Longan, who won the gold medal in 2020.
Teams USA and Australia will continue their three-game exhibition tour at Long Beach City College on Tuesday, April 9th at 6pm.
