U.S. coach Sheryl Reeve will have Mike Thibault, Duke coach Carla Lawson and Texas A&M coach Joni Taylor as assistants at the Paris Olympics.
The United States Basketball Association announced Reeve’s coaching staff for the women’s national team on Tuesday. We have a staff that won the World Cup and earned an automatic ticket to the 2024 Olympics.
“Each has different strengths and I look forward to working with them to help them succeed in Paris,” said Reeve, coach and general manager of the Minnesota Lynx.
As the Olympics begin on July 26th, the U.S. team will aim to win their 11th Olympic gold medal for the eighth consecutive year since 1996.
Thibault has coached with USA Basketball since 1993. He was an assistant coach when the U.S. women’s team won gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games and his 2007 FIBA Americas Championship. Currently the general manager of Washington, he is the WNBA’s winningest coach with 379 wins in 20 years.
Lawson, who started playing for the USA Basketball team in 1998 and won an Olympic gold medal in 2008, coached the USA women’s team to the 3×3 Olympic gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Games. She has been a coach at Duke since 2020 and served as an assistant coach for the NBA’s Boston Celtics in the 2019-20 season.
Taylor is the head coach of the 2023 U.S. U-19 National Team, which won the World Cup, and will be making his sixth appearance with the U.S. Basketball team. She is in her second season at Texas A&M after a seven-season 140-75 record at Georgia State.
