US welcomes Greece’s signing of the Artemis Agreement

On February 9, Greece became the 35th country to sign the Artemis Accords. Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapetritis signed the agreement for Greece during the 5th U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue held at the State Department in Washington, DC. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, and Hellenic Space Center Director Dr. Ioannis Dagris spoke at the signing ceremony, welcoming Greece’s commitment to peaceful, safe, and transparent space exploration and use.

The United States considers Greece an essential partner and a key NATO ally that protects NATO’s southeast flank. United by our democratic values, we are advancing our common goals of peace and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean, Western Balkans, Black Sea region and beyond. Our shared values ​​extend beyond defense cooperation and include a partnership in combating climate change, increasing bilateral investment and trade opportunities, and strengthening educational and cultural ties. . These efforts will make the U.S.-Greece relationship stronger than ever.

The U.S.-Greece Strategic Dialogue is a key feature of the bilateral relationship and shares common priorities in the areas of regional cooperation, defense and security, trade and investment, energy and the environment, law enforcement and counterterrorism, humanitarian challenges and disaster preparedness. Focuses on promoting matters. and connections between people.

The Artemis Accords were established in 2020 by the United States and seven other countries. They set out a practical set of principles to guide space exploration. Greece is a member of 34 countries: Angola, Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, and the Netherlands. will join. New Zealand, Nigeria, Poland, South Korea, Romania, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and United States – confirm the principles of the Agreement on Sustainable Civil Space Activities. The State Department and NASA are leading U.S. support and implementation of the agreement.
