Russia rejects UN request to demilitarize Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

The United Nations nuclear watchdog’s board of directors voted on Thursday to demand that Russia withdraw from Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

This was the Council’s fourth resolution condemning Russia’s actions against nuclear facilities in Ukraine. The first bill was passed in March 2022, the day before Russia occupied Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

The committee called for “the urgent withdrawal of all unauthorized military personnel and other unauthorized personnel” from nuclear facilities.

It called for the factory to be immediately returned to the full control of “competent Ukrainian authorities.”

But Russia rejected the demilitarization call, saying its “implementation would make the factories even more vulnerable.”

Prime Minister Cameron said: “I don’t want to be at the mercy of Russia’s narrative about divisions among allies. What I see is … incredible unity among allies, incredible unity in NATO.

“Of course there will be areas where we would like to discuss what more we can do and how we can help. It’s the kind of discussion we have.”

Why are so many Indians forced to work in combat zones?

Pat Nivin Maxwell immigrated to Israel from India in December last year, at the height of the Gaza conflict, leaving behind his pregnant wife and four-year-old daughter. Her decision to move to another country in search of work was not easy, especially in such a dangerous area.

It was a choice for “economic reasons,” said his cousin Jose Dennis. Independent. Driven by what economists describe as “extreme desperation” due to the lack of good-paying jobs in India, Maxwell took blue-collar jobs in dangerous locations, including on the front lines with Russia and Ukraine. He was one of hundreds of young Indians.

On March 4, Maxwell’s family was informed by phone that the 31-year-old had been seriously injured in an anti-tank missile attack on a poultry farm in northern Israel. “He was hospitalized with two other Indians,” Dennis says. “Then I found out he had passed away.”
