Lexington, Kentucky (March 27, 2024) — From cell phones to pacemakers, in today’s smart world, computers are embedded and essential to almost everything we do.

As technology advances, society is asking engineers to imagine, invent, and improve these systems that connect the world.

Now, thanks to a unique partnership between the University of Kentucky Stanley College and the Karen Pigman Technical College Extension Campus in Paducah and West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC), that call is being answered.

Starting this summer, students will have the opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree through WKCTC and transfer to the UK Engineering Paducah campus to earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Computer Engineering Technology (CET).

This innovative program is designed to prepare students to work in a wide range of industries including aerospace, automotive, consulting, government, healthcare, manufacturing, industrial equipment design, IT, energy and environmental solutions, and more.

  • Design/maintenance of databases and digital systems.
  • Network development and testing.
  • Program in multiple languages.and
  • Automation engineering, application engineering, control engineering, maintenance engineering, network support engineering, etc.

“The Computer Engineering Technology degree program we offer in partnership with West Kentucky Community and Technical College responds to the growing regional and global demand for technology industry talent,” said UK College of Engineering. said Rudy Buchheit, Rebecca Burchett Liebert Dean. He said. “It is equally important and necessary in a manufacturing environment that is becoming increasingly automated and reliant on digital technology.”

“WKCTC’s partnership with the University of Kentucky College of Engineering allows students to seamlessly earn an associate’s and bachelor’s degree in computer engineering technology,” said Lennia Akin, vice president of academic affairs at WKCTC. “Ultimately, this partnership will enhance access to higher education and prepare students to meet the evolving needs of the technology industry.”

Registration for summer and fall 2024 classes is now open, with summer classes available from mid-May to early August, and fall classes starting August 19th.

About the Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering Technology

The CET program provides in-depth knowledge in hardware and software design, development, and maintenance. Students learn industry standard approaches to application software development and cutting-edge problem-solving techniques for developing application code and firmware, including network and his/her web operations.

The curriculum includes classroom instruction and lab experiences that provide students with a strong background in cutting-edge development using programming languages currently used in industry.

Additionally, program participants gain an understanding of computer system architecture, from low-level gate design to high-end microprocessors to current bus standards.

“Complements in data analytics, machine learning, human-machine interaction, intelligent robots, interconnected supply chains, and the ability to send digital instructions into the physical world that can run smart, cost-effective, automated plants. technology requires a new set of computing skills,” explained Nelson Akafua, the founding dean of the Fujio Cho School of Engineering and Technology. “This degree course uniquely prepares students to become leaders in this evolving industry.”

CET students spend their first few years earning an AAS degree in Computer Engineering Technology at WKCTC’s campus, then pursue a bachelor’s degree at UK Engineering’s Paducah campus.

About UK Engineering Paducah Campus

Boasting over 44,000 square feet of teaching and research facilities, the UK Engineering Paducah campus offers study leading to a UK bachelor’s degree in mechanical and chemical engineering.

The Paducah campus also offers professional certifications in aerospace engineering, automotive production engineering, and environmental engineering.

Created out of a need to retain the region’s talent pool, the degree program not only provides a wide range of opportunities for students, but also serves the region’s need for professional engineers in a highly industrialized region of the Commonwealth.

More than 500 students have graduated from the Paducah campus, and the direct economic impact to Western Kentucky is estimated to be more than $25 million annually. Two-thirds of his graduates also remain in the Western Kentucky region.

The Paducah campus recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and Y. Charles Lu, Cutterjohn Professor of Engineering and Paducah Campus Director, said the CET program is a notable new addition.

“This achievement is certainly noteworthy, as this is the first new academic program in the school’s 25-year history. “It will have a huge impact on businesses, industry and students in the region,” he continued. “We would also like to express our deep gratitude to the local community for supporting this new program. Without their generous support, it would not have been possible.”
