UC Santa Cruz has joined a nonprofit consortium of 126 North American universities focused on research and training in Earth system science. Membership in Atmospheric Research University Corporation (UCAR) means UC Santa Cruz is part of a network comprised of nearly every academic program in Earth System Science across the continent.
Membership benefits include everything from internships that give students research experience with top scientists, to fellowships that support the next generation of Earth system scientists, to one of the best modeling at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Includes access to over 30 professional development opportunities throughout your career. Centers participating in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
UCAR’s membership aligns well with the recent launch of the University of California, Santa Cruz Strategic planning for climate change, sustainability and resilience, is also consistent with the university’s goal of encouraging diverse students to pursue careers in science. UC Santa Cruz was represented by Associate Professor Claudie Beaulieu of Marine Science and Nicole Feldl, Associate Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, and the department led the membership application with support from Departments of Marine Science and Applied Mathematics.
“Given the high-impact research and educational activities conducted at the University of California, Santa Cruz in Earth system sciences such as atmospheric science, climate science, hydrology, oceanography, biogeochemistry, and solar physics, The time has come,” said Professor Beaulieu.
“I am heartened by the debate over the predictability of the Earth system. We have an urgent need to make reliable, observationally verified predictions about the climate we will live in. ,” Feldl said. “UCAR plays a valuable role in promoting coordinated research efforts in climate science.”
