SARASOTA, FL β€”

There are just over five months left until the 2024 Summer Olympics. NBC2 will be home for the game. The Road to Paris is running through Sarasota this week.

America’s top rowers will compete in the winter speed order at Nathan Benderson Park over the next few days.

The event marks the beginning of a months-long Olympic qualification process. We hope 149 of our nation’s best athletes will row from Southwest Florida to Paris.

“It would be really cool to qualify,” said Sorin Kozik, a member of the U.S. Senior National Rowing Team. “I’ve been thinking about it ever since I started rowing, so to actually qualify… It’s going to be a huge thing.” Achievement. “

The players will not be able to get official tickets to Paris this week. That will be next month. But American coaches are taking notice and are handing out invitations to future qualifying events, including the Olympic Trials.

“It’s just a matter of being consistent throughout the week,” Kozik said of his goal for the winter speed order.

One of the rowers competing is Clark Dean from Sarasota. The Harvard graduate grew up just five miles from Nathan Benderson Park. He started racing for Sarasota Crew in the sixth grade. He is now trying to qualify for the Paris Olympics on the same course where he first learned how to row.

“I’ve come full circle. Now I’m living at home again and rowing where I rowed in high school, but this time for the Olympics,” Dean said.

“Being from here and being from Florida, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It was a great place to grow up,” Dean added.

If Dean qualifies, it will be his second time participating in the Olympics. The first was Tokyo in 2020, which was completely changed by the coronavirus pandemic. So Dean is excited about the regular Olympic experience and has her one goal in mind.

“I was fifth in Tokyo. Now it’s medal or no-go,” Dean said.

Dean and the other Olympic hopefuls will continue to compete in the winter speed order until Saturday.

The group will then return to Sarasota to participate in the Rowing Selection Camp from March 3rd to 24th, and the Olympic and Paralympic Rowing Trials from April 2nd to 7th.

As the U.S. Olympic team is assembled, there will be fewer and fewer rowers for each event.
