White Earth Tribal and Community College was awarded $2.5 million to begin offering associate degrees in natural sciences, including biology, chemistry and physics. Red Lake Nation College has been awarded $2.5 million to expand its social and behavioral science curriculum to include coursework rooted in Ojibwa language and culture, according to Sen. Smith’s office.
“STEM education is more important than ever as the demand for STEM-educated employees skyrockets,” Sen. Smith said in a statement. “This funding will provide an accessible pathway for Indigenous students to pursue higher education and serve their communities while incorporating their tribal cultural heritage and roots into the curriculum.”
Klobuchar added that expanding higher education could be a game-changer for students. “These National Science Foundation awards will provide students at White Earth Tribal Community College and Red Lake Nation College with essential skills for in-demand careers while securing Ojibwe language and language proficiency. “Culture remains an important element of education,” she said in a statement.
