Two candidates in Maryland’s 6th District Democratic primary race heat up on TV

The race for the Democratic Party’s nomination to succeed Rep. David Trone (D-Maryland) is heating up with five weeks left until the party’s primary election. On Tuesday, a second candidate ran a TV ad accusing the same front-runner of having ties to. Extremely Republican. ”

The ad, by state Democratic Rep. Joe Vogel, is an attempt by Democrats to differentiate themselves ahead of the May 14 election in a crowded field where policy stances on the issues most important to voters are often unreliable. This suggests that the election campaign has entered a new phase.

“The difference is our approach,” Vogel, a Gen Z member of the state House of Delegates, said during a $35,000 ad purchase in the Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh area TV markets. Mr. Vogel’s ads seek to draw a contrast with his most likely opponent, April McClain Delaney, who is the only candidate in the race to run ads on television.

“Delaney donates to radical Republicans and is friends with Tucker Carlson and Paul D. Ryan,” Vogel said into the camera as a small photo flashed on Delaney’s screen. Carlson is a former Fox News host. and former Speaker of the House Ryan. “I’m from the generation of school shootings and I know you can’t expect politicians to do the right thing. You have to make them.”

In previous debates, Delaney brushed off Vogel’s abuse, pointing out that Ryan and her husband served in Congress, and that their children knew each other and had interacted with other Republicans and their families. It pointed out. His campaign is asking voters to consider the candidates’ track records and vote for the Democrat who has the best chance of holding the seat in November.

“She’s in the perfect position to get the general,” campaign spokeswoman Susan Kennedy told The Washington Post.

The contrasting ads feature Delaney (a former Biden administration official and wife of wealthy businessman John Delaney, who held the same Congressional seat from 2013 to 2019) as well as more than a dozen other Democrats. This is the latest salvo in the election campaign. Congressman Leslie J. Lopez (Montgomery), Hagerstown Mayor Tekesha Martinez, Montgomery County Councilmembers Laurie Ann Sayles, Peter Choharis, George Gluck, Jeffrey Grammer, Ashwani Jain, Stephen R. McDough, Mohammad S. Mozumdar and Adrian Petrus are also running. , Destiny Drake West, Kiambo “Bo” White, Altimont Mark Wilkes.

No reliable polls have identified a front-runner in the race. Delaney and Vogel are leading the fundraising effort.

Several candidates have drawn attention to the Delaney family’s wealth and ties to D.C. politics, but none have made the point as sharply as Vogel. At a debate in Frederick, Maryland, last month, Vogel brought up decades of political contributions to former Republican Sen. Jim DeMint’s re-election campaign from South Carolina, particularly gays and single women. He vehemently criticized schools that employ As an unwed mother and a public school teacher. While Vogel gave his opinion, Delaney shook his head and at one point threw his hands in the air.

Her campaign has not denied the donation and declined to respond to Vogel’s criticisms of the record.

Oren Adam, Vogel’s campaign manager, said the ad was not an attack.

“Our ad doesn’t say that donating to Jim DeMint or being friends with Paul D. Ryan or Tucker Carlson is a bad thing. But Joe Vogel takes a completely different approach. “It’s just that we’re doing it,” he said in an emailed statement. “If April McClain Delaney considers this an attack, she may reconsider her donor choices and who she invites to her holiday party.”

Delaney’s campaign has not publicly responded to these criticisms. In exchange, Delaney will run ads highlighting her fundraising efforts over competitors and her experience advocating for children in the Biden administration and with Common Sense, a nonprofit that aims to keep children safe online. focused on.

“Big tech companies see children as targets,” Delaney said in his latest ad. “In Congress, we will work to rein in Big Tech, improve online privacy, and expand mental health services.”

As of the last filing deadline, Delaney’s campaign had raised $536,557 in donations. Mr. Vogel had the next highest fundraising total, bringing in $374,033. Martinez’s campaign had raised $318,869 by the final filing deadline. He raised less than $150,000, even though most of the other candidates in the race actually started fundraising.

Delaney will be joined by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), former Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner, former Maryland Democratic Party Chairman Terry Lierman, and many other locals in the 6th District. It is supported by authorities.

Vogel has garnered support from several influential groups in Democratic state politics, including the Maryland Education Association, Teamsters Joint Council 62, and the Sierra Club.
