The 4-H Animal Science Career Quest is back after a year-long hiatus, and the 4-H Spring Livestock Workshop is back in a new format for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
For many 4-H youth, participation in statewide programs is an important part of the learning experience. Two of his 4-H animal science events with statewide impact in Michigan will be held again in early 2024. The 4-H Animal Science Career Quest was held on Saturday, February 17th, and the 4-H Spring Livestock Workshop was held on his Saturday, March 2nd. , both located on the campus of Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing.
4-H Animal Science Career Quest is a career exploration event for middle and high school students interested in working in a variety of animal-related fields. Youth attend breakout sessions throughout the day in their areas of interest. Topics for the 2024 breakout sessions include:
- Species sessions: beef, small ruminants, pigs, dairy, horses, companion animals, and poultry.
- Learning Labs: Building Skills for the Future, Blind Leader Dogs, Livestock Judging, Horse Judging, Dairy Judging, Dairy Nutrition, Veterinary Medicine and Nursing, Horse Management, and more.
- Discipline sessions: behavior and welfare, health, reproduction, nutrition, education and support.
The 4-H Animal Science Career Quest provides youth with the opportunity to explore a variety of opportunities to work with animals. You can also learn more about the post-secondary education options MSU offers and connect with the university’s faculty and staff. This is his second time Michigan 4-H has offered this program. This year’s program attracted more than 80 participants from all over the state.
The 4-H Spring Livestock Workshop also returned in 2024 after a long hiatus. This program is designed for 4-H youth and beef, sheep, pig and goat project volunteers. This will give participants the opportunity to delve deeper into their projects and topics such as livestock vetting, marketing livestock projects, animal nutrition, and animal reproduction.
Prior to 2024, the program was last implemented in February 2020, just before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Statewide Livestock Programming Committee had planned to hold a workshop and register at capacity in 2023, but it was ultimately canceled due to a major snowstorm. This year, the program finally returned and has attracted more than 80 participants from all over Michigan.
