ROME – Former President Donald Trump on Saturday slammed District Attorney Fani Willis for lining her own pockets by prosecuting him and other defendants in the Fulton County election interference case.
The former president addressed allegations that Willis benefited financially from hiring Nathan Wade to oversee the case. Defense attorneys in the case allege that Wade paid thousands of dollars for trips to Aruba, Napa Valley and other areas.
Willis and Wade said they became lovers a few months after she hired him, and their relationship ended last summer. They split the cost of the trip evenly, and say they haven’t done anything wrong.
“Corrupt Fani Willis hired her boyfriend, Nathan Wade, so they could illegally make money together,” Trump said. “‘Well, darling, who can we go after?'”
President Trump called the lawsuit a “witch hunt” and said the lawsuit should be dismissed.
“We did nothing wrong other than challenge the integrity of this election,” he said. This election was rigged. ”
Saturday’s comments were a new twist in an unusual election case in which the nation’s most prominent criminal defendant criticized the top prosecutor.
Last August, a grand jury indicted Trump and 18 others for their roles in an illegal plot to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. Trump claimed that voter fraud cost him the election, but numerous investigations found no credible evidence of fraud and two recounts confirmed Biden’s victory here.
Willis achieved early victories in the case, including four guilty pleas from defendants who agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. But Willis himself became a target in January when the defendants accused him of having an inappropriate relationship with Wade and benefiting him financially.
They asked Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee to disqualify Willis and his entire staff from prosecuting the case. McAfee is expected to rule on this request in the near future.
On Saturday, President Trump addressed the accusations against Willis in a speech at the Forum River Center in Rome. He derided Willis and Wade’s relationship as “almost a beautiful love story”.
“They took a great cruise,” Trump said. “And they got [Wade] Because he’s taking more vacations than anyone has ever taken and is paying big bucks with money he made by wrongly prosecuting me and other innocent American patriots. ”
President Trump also took aim at Ms. Willis’ explanation of how she repaid Ms. Wade’s travel expenses in cash.
“They’ve been after me. Now she’s in trouble for taking the money she just gave him,” President Trump said. “She said she paid it back in cash. That’s a lie. That’s a complete lie.”
At a recent hearing, Willis’ father corroborated her statement that he had followed her advice and kept large amounts of cash on hand. An employee at a Napa Valley winery also said he remembered Willis paying $400 in cash for a tour and two bottles of wine.
Trump was not the only defendant in the election lawsuit who attended Saturday’s rally. Former Republican Party Chairman David Schaefer attended the rally but did not speak.
Former Lieutenant Governor Bert Jones also attended the rally. Willis was the subject of an investigation by a Fulton County judge, who said she was holding political fundraising events for Democrats who were challenging Jones in the 2022 election. Prosecution was prohibited. The decision to indict Jones rests with the Georgia Prosecuting Attorneys Council, which has not announced its decision.
Jones criticized “rogue prosecutors” in a speech Saturday.
