Trump lags Biden in cash, relies on big donors to catch up

Former President Donald J. Trump’s heavy reliance on Republican mega-donors in March came as his campaign and Republicans sought to close the fiscal gap with President Biden, according to a new federal filing Monday. This was revealed in documents submitted to the government.

For much of his campaign, Trump has relied on small-dollar donors, particularly those who donate less than $200 online, to keep his campaign afloat. Most major donors stayed away.

But in recent weeks, as Mr. Trump defeated his main opponent and Mr. Biden and the Democratic Party gathered fundraising momentum, those donors opened up their checkbooks to the former president.

In the last two weeks of March alone, one pro-Trump committee raised nearly $18 million, almost all of it from six-figure donations. The campaign said Trump and Republicans ended the month with $93 million on hand in each committee, and raised more than $65 million in March.

Still, Republicans are lagging behind. The campaign said Biden and the Democratic Party had collectively raised more than $187 million in the first three months of this year, including $90 million in March, leaving them with $100 million in cash at the end of the month. The total amount was 92 million dollars.

Mr. Trump’s campaign has not disclosed fundraising details for the first quarter. The two committees in their filing Monday reported that they have collectively raised nearly $90 million since January, which does not include money directly raised by campaigns or the Republican National Committee.

The filing Monday with the Federal Election Commission is the first detailed examination this year of the joint fundraising committees from which Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden raised the bulk of their money. These committees work with a candidate’s political party, some of which can raise more than $800,000 from individual donors, transfer funds to the campaign itself, and also build a national campaign. To do.

(Campaigns and political parties themselves submit monthly reports, which do not include details of individual donors.)

The Biden Victory Fund, the president’s joint fundraising committee with the major parties, reported raising $121.3 million in the first three months of the year.

Top donors included Seth MacFarlane, creator of “Family Guy.” Billionaire entrepreneur Reid Hoffman. George Conway, a lawyer, has been a fierce critic of President Trump and was married to Trump’s top adviser Kellyanne Conway until last year.

The reporting period also includes Biden’s March 28 fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall, which raised $25 million, according to campaign aides.

The Trump 47 Committee, Trump’s new joint fundraising committee with the Republican National Committee, was formally established with the FEC on January 31st. The company reported raising $23.6 million in the second quarter, including $17.8 million in the second half of the year. In March alone, that was largely due to his six-figure donation.

Those gifts include three from hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, who was a key supporter of Trump’s 2016 campaign but less involved in the 2020 presidential race. It included $814,399 dated May 25th. Trump has been courting Mercer and other donors in recent weeks.

Under Trump’s joint fundraising agreement with the RNC, a portion of donations to the Trump 47 Committee will be directed to political action committees that have paid for his expensive legal bills. The first $6,600 will go to Trump’s campaign, and the next $5,000 will go to Save America PAC, which spent more than $50 million on Trump’s legal costs last year. The RNC and the parties receive the remaining amount.

Other big donors to the Trump 47 include Roger William Norman, a Nevada real estate developer who gave nearly $500,000 to a super PAC supporting Trump last year, and Las Vegas aerospace mogul Robert T.・Includes Mr. Bigelow. He donated $5 million to the Trump super PAC in February.

Jeffrey C. Sprecher, chief executive of Intercontinental Exchange, which owns the New York Stock Exchange, also donated more than $800,000, and his wife Kelly Loeffler, who briefly served as a Republican senator from Georgia, also donated more than $800,000. similarly donated more than $800,000.

Joe Ricketts, chairman of TD Ameritrade, also offered the highest price. Other major donors include former pro wrestling entrepreneur Linda McMahon. Phil Ruffin, casino king. and Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets. All three donated at least $1 million to pro-Trump super PACs last year.

The Save America Community Chest, which served as Trump’s primary fundraising vehicle during the primary campaign, raised $65.8 million in the first quarter of 2024 and left $13.7 million on hand in March. It ended.
