Trump defeats Nikki Haley in South Carolina primary

Former President Donald Trump defeated former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley in South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary, a result that was a major blow to his campaign.

CNN, AP, NBC and others called for Trump to run immediately after polls closed at 7 p.m. ET. His early returns showed him dominating in much of the state, especially in the Upstate and Midland regions.

“Wow, that was faster than I expected,” Trump said at a victory party after the campaign was called. “We were able to get a bigger win than we expected.”

The former president never mentioned Haley in his victory speech.

For Haley, the last remaining leading Republican candidate still challenging Trump, the loss comes in a state where she once served as governor. However, in her speech on election night, she did not change her resolve to campaign.

“Over the next 10 days, 21 more states and territories will speak,” she told a cheering crowd in Charleston. “They deserve a real choice, not a Soviet-style election with only one candidate. And I have an obligation to give them that choice.”

“We cannot afford another four years of Biden’s failures and Trump’s lack of focus,” he added.

It was in South Carolina that Haley, who was first elected in 2010 when Republican support was strong nationwide, quickly rose to prominence in national Republican circles.

The South Carolina primary is Haley’s fourth consecutive loss in an early voting state, following the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. (Trump won the Nevada caucuses, but Haley lost the Nevada primary to “None of These Candidates.”)

Trump has long had a relationship with the state’s top Republican leaders, but even though the former governor was in office in Columbia, most of the state’s top Republicans chose Trump rather than Haley. This was extremely beneficial during the primary cycle as he lined up behind Mr.

Haley is currently in a position to take on Trump ahead of Super Tuesday, when voters in many delegate-rich states such as California and Texas cast their ballots on March 5th, which could potentially affect the presidential election.
