The light board comes to life with vibrant patterns that will spark the curiosity of a group of middle school students and keep them engaged in captivating demonstrations. Prior to this exhibit, students discovered the world of computer science through engaging presentations.
CS Roadshow is a student group that visits Austin schools to teach students how to get involved in computer science. This traveling show includes informational slideshows, interactive coding demonstrations, and insightful Q&A sessions. Dr. William Balko, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and club sponsor, spoke about the importance of exposing students to computer science early.
“One of the biggest weaknesses I see is that students are not coming into college well-prepared,” Barco said. “By doing[the show]if people get interested in[computer science]early on and want to go into the same field, they can say, ‘I know I have to learn this, but I don’t want to.’ must take this seriously.”
Faiza Rahman, a senior computer science student and club president, said she is working to increase activity within the organization, which was founded in 2015.
“Last year, we probably had seven events total for the year,” Rahman said. “Compared to this year…we had 17 events last semester alone, and we have 10 more scheduled this semester.”
Rahman said she has been a member of CS Roadshow since her freshman year and is pushing for more active participation because she wants to continue to see the organization grow.
“I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, and it’s really heartening to see more and more people coming to the conference,” Rahman said. “We regularly have at least 30 people in our meetings who are really excited about volunteering with us. I wanted to leave this organization in a good place. is.”
While the club provides advice to Austin students, freshman computer science student Helen Gordon said members within the club also receive support.
“The officers are mentors to us because they’re really nice,” Gordon said. “We talk about paths to take in computer science, and I also like to get advice on which advanced division classes are best for me or which other CS organizations have been helpful.”
Bourko said Rahman had big plans for the club’s future.
“(Lerman) said that in the future, he would like to introduce a mentoring role where some of our students would connect with new students and serve as mentors,” Burco said. “I’ve never done anything like that before. I think it’s a great idea.”
Rahman said she loves encouraging students to explore computer science.
“We’re trying to get this information out to as many people as possible because having access to that knowledge can change one child’s life,” Rahman said. “If we were able to inspire one of them to major in CS, it means the organization has succeeded in achieving what it wants to do.”
