As North American soccer continues to grow as a sport, transfers from MLS to Europe seem to be becoming more popular. There were success stories, there were many failures, and sometimes superstars appeared who lit up the European upper class.
We take a look at the 10 most expensive transfers from MLS to Europe, and spoiler alert, most of them are quite recent. Because that’s how inflation works.
Let’s do our best.
daryl dyke
From Orlando City to West Bromwich Albion, £7.4m
Remember Emmanuel Emenike? He was absolutely fast in FIFA at the time. Well, Darryl is his cousin. It’s not really relevant, but it’s just a little bit of information.
Dike is currently in his third season in the WBA, scoring eight goals in 32 appearances. The USMNT striker has been plagued by injuries and has ruptured his Achilles tendon twice. Very, very, very not ideal.
Gabriel Slonina
Chicago Fire to Chelsea, £7.8m
Gaga Slonina is truly a person with an eye on the future. Although he is only 19 years old, he has yet to feature for Chelsea and is currently on loan at Belgian Pro League side Eupen. Slonina has already played for the USMNT, making her the youngest goaltender ever. Keep your eyes peeled.

Brenner
FC Cincinnati to Udinese for £8.5m
The Brazilian striker of the same name had a pretty good run in Cincinnati before crossing the Atlantic to play in northeastern Italy. He has played 36 minutes for Le Zebrette since joining last summer. He hasn’t scored yet.
That can happen sometimes.
brenden aaronson
Philadelphia Union to RB Salzburg, £10.85m
Medford’s Messi is in his fourth season in Europe, and performed well at Salzburg, earning him a big move to Leeds. Aaronson initially looked decent in his only Premier League season to date, but his lack of physicality soon became an issue and he was eventually relegated.
He is currently on loan at Union Berlin and could very well return to Premier League side Leeds next season. That said, the Championship is unforgiving and his parent club are currently embroiled in a three-way battle for automatic promotion. Let’s take a look…

alfonso davis
Vancouver Whitecaps to Bayern Munich for £12m
Roadrunner is crushing it. you already knew that. He literally won the Champions League in his second season in Germany. Wherever he plays club football in the future, we think this won’t be the last time he lifts that trophy.
It is reported that a move to Real Madrid is imminent. Representing Canada as part of the new Galactico project with Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé and Endrik? Times are changing.
Djordje Petrovich
New England Revolution to Chelsea for £12m
Petrovic joined MLS from Serbia and has had a rather strange career path through soccer. He is now Chelsea’s starting goalkeeper due to Roberto Sanchez’s injury. And did you know? He may remain the starting keeper. Djordje essentially won the Blues on penalties and advanced to the League Cup semi-finals.
Tati Castellanos
New York City FC to Lazio, £12.8m
Valentin Mariano Jose Castellanos Jimenez, or Tati Since moving to Lazio last year, he has mainly been used as a sub. However, according to FotMob, he has recorded the most Player of the Match performances for Le Acquire this season (along with Felipe Andersson three times).
Proper impact sub behavior.

Ricardo Pepi
FC Dallas to FC Augsburg, £14m
Pepi was prolific with the USMNT, but things didn’t work out for him at Augsburg. However, he was still young and got his second chance on loan to Groningen. The American made his way to the Netherlands and has now permanently moved to PSV, with whom he currently plays in the league.
john duran
Chicago Fire to Aston Villa for £14.2m
The Colombian player is inexperienced, but there is real talent there. Coach Unai Emory has used Duran primarily off the bench for the Villains, but he’s still only 20 years old and believes he can get more out of him. As long as Emory remains at Villa, he stands to succeed and the opportunities will come.
Miguel Almiron
Atlanta United to Newcastle United, £20.5m
Everyone’s favorite smiling little tree frog winger has been a regular at the Toon since signing in 2018. Six seasons later, he’s still giving it his all every week.
There are whispers that Newcastle could sell him in the summer to free up funds for their world domination project. There will be tears on Tyneside, but Miggy is 30 and that’s understandable. It doesn’t get any easier than this.
Side note: Miggy has lived in the US or UK for the past 7 years and doesn’t seem to speak a word of English. She has to respect that level of dedication to the Spanish language.
